The Problem with Plastic

With this burden of knowing what plastic is doing to our environment and bodies, we desperately sought a solution to avoid plastic in our daily lives. When buying groceries and household products, our decisions around which item to buy became more about the packaging rather than the product itself. Our team was frustrated by the current options available in our community, so we are bringing the plastic free movement to Atlanta. Find our next pop-up on our event calendar and continue to follow our journey as we release updates about our business.

Shockingly, 91% of plastic waste is NOT recycled. And of the plastics made, 40% are for packaging. Typically, that packaging is used just once, then thrown into the garbage. But the story of plastic doesn’t end there. Plastic was engineered so well that every piece ever made is still on this planet. Unlike organic matter, which decomposes and continues the cycle of life, plastic breaks up into tiny pieces. These microplastics pollute our waterways and eventually break into tiny nanoplastics that make their way into our bloodstream, causing cancerous cell formations.

Plastic production is out of control. It’s cheaper to make virgin (new) plastics than recycle plastics, providing little incentive for waste management companies to actually recycle plastic. We want to put a stop to this vicious cycle. Stop buying next week’s garbage (single-use packaging) with this week's groceries. REco Grocery’s mission is to reduce, repurpose, and rethink plastic waste in our daily lives by making it easy for you to avoid it when you grocery shop.
